Travelling to Florence

TRAVELLING TO FLORENCE

Florence is easily accessible via three Italian airports; Florence, Pisa and Bologna.

Florence Airport is the closest to the city - approx 4km away - with flights to and from many European cities, including London. From the airport it is possible to take a VOLAINBUS (approx 20 mins) into the city centre, or take a taxi, or tram. For timetables see below.

Pisa Airport is good for budget flights, but to get to Florence, you will need to take a train. Pisa Airport is serviced by the PISA MOVER which will take you directly to Pisa Centrale station. This costs approx €2.70 (buy at machine on platform and is just outside of the main arrivals area) and takes 5mins. Onward trains to Firenze Santa Maria Novella cost approx €8.70 (again, buy at ticket machines on the platforms but remember to validate your ticket) and take between 1hr-1hr35mins. Bologna Airport is another great option, and a bus service runs between the airport and Bologna Centrale, for €6.00 (tickets can be purchased from the machine at the bus stop). The train from Bologna to Florence S. M. N. is much quicker, at around 35 mins, and more pleasant (the trains are modern, very clean and have excellent Wifi) but can be expensive if booked on the day. There is also quite a walk between the platforms, and plenty of escalators to navigate, so give yourself plenty of time if pre-purchasing tickets.

Once you are in the city, the buses are excellent but often busy. The No. 11 is the route that links the Cimitero Evangelico Agli Allori, the British Institute and Villa il Palmerino (with a short walk). Bus tickets can be purchased from the kiosk outside of Firenze S. M. N. (opposite McDonalds), look for the ATAF sign. Each ticket cost €1.40 and lasts for 90mins of travel.
